How is ATRA
spending your donations?
Keeping track of expenses by dog is
routine accounting practice for canine rescue groups. The ATRA Census System
was
implemented in 2000 to record dogs as they came into rescue and keep track of
donations and expenses. The current
ATRA board decided to discontinue detail
expense reporting using the census numbers. As a result:
-
There is no information available
about how many or which ATRA dogs have been boarded or where and how
long they
were in a kennel. When 18 ATRA dogs were forgotten in OH boarding kennels
during 2006, the
treasurers could not provide information on the cost of this
oversight.
-
The cost for ATRA to treat heart
worm positive dogs is unknown.
-
When asked how much ATRA spent on
medical care for already adopted dogs, the treasurers again had
no
information.
-
The cost for routine or non-routine
veterinary procedures is unknown.
-
ATRA cannot provide the cost of dog
care by state. This is critical information for planning.

It is impossible for the ATRA board to
review their actions because they do not have detailed expense records.
They are
unable to evaluate problem issues and make effective changes. Decisions will
continue to be made based
on emotion rather than facts until this changes.
The Goldie
Fund
When ATRA volunteers rescued a special
needs Airedale named Goldie, a special fund was set up. Donations
given to the Goldie Fund were to help pay Goldie's expenses. As a restricted
fund, these donations could NOT be
used for general expenses. They were solicited and given specifically for
Goldie.
The 2006 ATRA financial reports reflect total
donations to the Goldie Fund as $13,994 . However, the ATRA board
meeting minutes from November 2006 include the following statement:
Sally
Schnellmann headed up the fundraising for Goldie and has so far raised in
excess of $16,000 including both
donations and e-bay sales.
One has to wonder what happened to the rest of those
donations given for Goldie. More than $2000 is unreported
in the Goldie Fund.
